I slept on the couch last night, with foam pads, blankets and pet beds all around the living room. Molly didn’t sleep on any of the beds I made for her and chose to sleep on the couch with me, which made me so nervous. She doesn’t seem to realize she is missing a leg and is flying up onto the couches and chairs. I cringe everytime. I blocked her way up on the rest of the furniture, but the couch was a different story since I could be ready to help her up or down.
She slept at my feet all night and it was a fitful night, moreso for me actually. I woke up every time she moved, afraid she would jump off the couch and break her leg. Granted, I had laid out six inches of foam along the edge of the couch, just in case, but it still didn’t stop me from being a wreck all night.
Molly slept. She does tire easily, as the vet said she would, but it seems as if her missing leg is more of an annoyance to her than a tragedy. And when I take her outside, it’s almost like there is nothing wrong with her. I think she gets great traction in the grass and it gives her quite a bit of life. She’s still exploring, still barking when she hears another dog bark, still lying under the table, still sitting next to me if I’m pulling weeds. She just hops. And she’s turning it into an olympic sport … gettin’ darn good at it, I might add … lol
That’s great to hear that Molly is doing so well! I ended up staying on a blow up mattress downstairs for the first few nights and boy was that uncomfortable! I found that with all the bedding areas I set up for Mackenzie (throughout the house) she always went for her favorite spot anyway – on the tile near the front door. Lucky for me, I was able to return the ortho mattress, pet bed, rugs and blankets I bought for her homecoming….
Sounds like your Molly is doing extremely well so far…we’ll be keeping our paws crossed that she continues to do well during her recovery. Way to go Molly!

Wonderful! Where did I read the line about dogs being born with three legs and one extra? Sounds like that is especially true for your Molly. 🙂 What a trooper!
Wishing her (and you) continued success at a speedy recovery!

Almost? There is nothing wrong with her now that she got rid of that painful leg! 🙂
Try to set a good example for molly be remaining a strong, calm pack leader. As Dr Waldman says, if you want things to be normal again, you must act like life is normal.
Thanks for the great update!
Thanks for the advice … and they all know around here that I am not just the leader, but the Queen … lol. I live in a house full of men, and Molly is the only other female in the house. She is the princess. But I will always be the queen. 🙂
She has been so normal now it’s uncanny. And she is constantly surprising me with what she can do. I know it’s because she doesn’t get that anything is different except that she falls on her face every now and then, but then she looks at the floor like it was in her way or something. Still makes me cringe every time she flies up onto the couch though …. I am so worried about her breaking her other leg so I make sure to help her down. But she’s even flying up the three steps to come in from outside to go to the kitchen. I won’t let her go down them yet but I have decided not to stop her from the ‘going up’ part of life.
Greetings Princess and Queen:
Of course, I have to ask….are the two of you playing poker in this exclusive female society from which the male gender is excluded by your shared understanding? Do you woof to each other deep into the night? Hey, there’s an article here!
I’m so glad to hear that Molly is doing well… I totally remember all the sleepless nites we had when Jake was first recovering… Everytime he moved, I’d jump out of bed to make sure he was OK… Of course, hubby slept through everything!! I was the one with giant black circles under my eyes! 🙂 Luckily for me, I took a week and a half off from work, so I’d try to take cat naps during the day, when Jake was sleeping…
Sending you and Molly a big hug!!
